RESEARCH & ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
DATABASE PROJECT

The world-renowned environment of Alta holds many research and environmental education opportunities. If you bring your project to Alta then you will see firsthand the ecological beauty, natural resources and diversity that this canyon holds. It is because of these treasured natural resources that most of the land in Alta is National Forest and that Little Cottonwood Canyon is a protected watershed under Salt Lake City’s jurisdiction. The community of Alta and Alta Ski Area are geographically located in the upper region of this culinary watershed, presenting us with a vested interested in the protection of the air, land and water in this canyon.

The Alta Environmental Center and Friends of Alta hold the similar goal of encouraging and supporting education and research on and in Alta’s environment.  We have joined efforts and created this “Research and Environmental Education Database Project.” The purpose of this project is to: collect basic information on environmental education and research performed in Alta or Little Cottonwood Canyon, offer our support for those interested, have a centralized location to store all information, and in time share past studies within the database via this website.

The database will serve the community of Alta and visiting researchers in the following ways:

• A viable location for background information and references
• A resource of contacts for guidance, information, and collaboration
• A guide for project direction and objective
• An educational tool for the classroom and self knowledge
• A source for better understanding the dynamics of Little Cottonwood Canyon
• A resource for technical support (access, transportation, lodging, supplies, etc.)

Sharing your information and feedback will guide us in serving future researchers and educators, and help serve in the protection of Alta through continued awareness and research. This project is more than a collection of information but a collaborative array of partnerships, and with that we welcome your research to Little Cottonwood Canyon. Please take the time to fill out the Research Info form or Environmental Education Info form and send it to the Alta Environmental Center. You are welcome to contact us if we can be of any assistance. Thank you for your participation!

Sincerely,
